AIA Nebraska Excellence in Design Jury Chair:
Brigitte Shim, FRAIC, Hon. FAIA, Shim–Sutcliffe Architects

Brigitte Shim along with her partner, A. Howard Sutcliffe, are both principals in the design firm Shim–Sutcliffe Architects. Shim–Sutcliffe's built work explores the integration and interrelated scales of architecture, landscape, furniture and fittings. To date, Shim and Sutcliffe have received fourteen Governor General's Medals and Awards for Architecture from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and an American Institute of Architects National Honor Award along with many other professional accolades for their built work ranging from projects for non–profit groups to public and private clients.

Brigitte Shim is a Professor at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design at the University of Toronto engaged in core design studios, advanced design studios as well as teaching courses in the History and Theory of Landscape Architecture. She was the Eero Saarinen Visiting Professor at Yale University's School of Architecture (2019, 2014, 2010, 2005) and an invited visiting professor at the Ecole Polytechnique Federal de Lausanne, Harvard University's Graduate School of Design, the University of Auckland's School of Architecture and Planning within the National Institute for Creative Arts and Industries and others. She is a strong advocate for design excellence and has served on numerous international, national and local design juries including the 2007 Aga Khan Architecture Award Master jury and is currently serving on their Architecture Award Steering Committee. In January 2013, Brigitte Shim and her partner A. Howard Sutcliffe were both awarded the Order of Canada, "for their contributions as architects designing sophisticated structures that represent the best of Canadian design to the world."

Barry Sampson, OAA, FRAIC, LEED AP | Baird Sampson Neuert Architects
Barry Sampson is a registered architect in Ontario, a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada and a Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto. He has been a principal in the firm Baird Sampson Neuert Architects since 1981 and has directed many of the firm's architecture and public space design projects, a number of which have received awards for excellence, including: three Governor General's awards, a prestigious American Institute of Architect's Honour Award, a Royal Architectural Institute of Canada Innovation Award and over forty architectural design, urban design and technical design awards. As a result of his firm's record of achievement and contribution to education Baird Sampson Neuert Architects received the RAIC Firm Award in 2007. More recently Barry was awarded the CMHC Excellence in Education Award for outstanding educational contribution to sustainable practices.

Barry is a highly skilled planner, as well as designer, and has extensive experience with space programming for a variety of building types including: education facilities, civic institutions, libraries, therapeutic and cultural facilities. He has extensive experience in the field of urban design and has directed a number of master planning projects for municipalities and major institutions including: Trent University, the Scarborough and downtown campuses of the University of Toronto, the Town of Wasaga Beach, and the City of Burlington. He has also directed a number of adaptive reuse and heritage projects and led many winning design competition teams for urban sites including Cloud Gardens in Toronto and Old Post Office Plaza, in St. Louis, Missouri's historic centre.

Marianne McKenna, OC, FRAIC, AIA | KPMB Architects
Marianne McKenna founded KPMB Architects with her partners in 1987 as a hybrid model of practice based on gender equity, collaboration, diversity and excellence. Today KPMB is globally recognized as an award–winning Canadian practice. Born in Montreal, and educated at Swarthmore College and Yale University, Marianne has devoted her career to design excellence in architecture. In 2012, she was invested as an Officer of the Order of Canada for creating "architecture that enriches the public experience."

Marianne is acclaimed as the architect of the Royal Conservatory TELUS Centre and its iconic Koerner Hall, which has been praised by artists ranging from Chick Corea to Yo–Yo Ma. Her projects also include the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto, the Mike & Ophelia Lazaridis Quantum–Nano Centre at the University of Waterloo, and the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, described by the Chicago Tribune as a 'spatially complex design that promises to teach valuable lessons of collaboration.' Currently she is working on projects for the Brearley School in New York and historic Massey Hall in Toronto. Marianne's love of architecture extends to teaching and mentoring. In the fall of 2016, she was the Lord Norman R. Foster Visiting Professor at Yale University and she currently sits on the Board of Directors for Metrolinx.
