In an effort to replace outdated campus buildings and provide new and modern academic science space including classrooms, lecture halls, teaching labs, research labs and instrument shops, as well as offices for faculty, researchers, staff, graduate students and administrators, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln commissioned the design and construction of two new facilities. The new Jorgensen Hall contains facilities for the Department of Physics and Astronomy, while the adjacent Voelte-Keegan Center houses Nanoscience, Nanotechnology and Nanofabrication functions. The adjoined buildings feature similar brick, glass and precast facades and were constructed in two phases on a site near the heart of the campus.
Both buildings are seeking Leadership in Energy and Environmental (LEED®) Silver ratings.
Jury Comments: A commendable massing and plan strategy that is legible and thoughtfully articulated. The use of natural materials of brick and wood provides both restraint and integrity to the interiors. The atrium design is simply a good space.
