EXTENDED USE / MERIT

Entry: Forest Drive Renovation, Hinton, Iowa
Firm: Randy Brown Architects
Owner(s): Withheld at owner’s request
Photographer: Farshid Assassi

A young family requested an extreme change in the spatial organization of their main floor home located on a farm in Iowa.  The owners requested that the existing living, kitchen and dining areas be redesigned in an orderly way with defined spaces and built-in storage, while capturing the panoramic views of their land.

The architects created definitive compartments for the kitchen, living and gallery through a continuous shelving unit that separates, while simultaneously connecting the three spaces.  The shelving unit design was also incorporated in the master suite.

The material palette of custom fabricated steel and maple plywood shelving units take cues from the rural context of Iowa.  Perforated steel panels connect the entry to the kitchen cabinets and create transparency. Wood boxes float off the floor, helping to define space and doubling as storage cabinets.

Jury Comments: Remarkable metamorphosis of an ordinary residence into a beautifully detailed home that eloquently frames spaces both inside and outside.
