The Assemblage
The Assemblage; Firm: Alley Poyner Macchietto Architecture. Photographer: Erin Giannangelo.
An existing, non-descript brick building, originally constructed as a 1925 repair garage, was purchased to house the contemporary collections of two prominent collectors. The open floor plan, supported by a barrel-vaulted steel trusses, made the existing building an ideal location for a private gallery and event space. Additions to the space consist of sizeable openings punched into its east facade allowing views to a future sculpture garden, “floating” art display walls placed on the exposed masonry walls.
AIA Nebraska Excellence in Design Jury Chair
Carrie Strickland, FAIA | Works Progress Architecture LLP | Portland, OR
Launching Works Progress Architecture (previously Works Partnership Architecture) in 2005, Strickland’s first adaptive reuse projects resulted in a series of endeavors that preserved the nature of the buildings that have made up the urban core of Portland for more than a century. With the extensive understanding of city fabric, Strickland has designed buildings that merge into their context yet are provocative, modern and challenge the contemporary norm. Rather than being restricted by codes and clients, Strickland masterfully manages to optimize the design opportunities within any given outline.
