The University of Nebraska-Lincoln School of Biological Sciences (Manter Hall) renovation is an extensive remodel of the first and fourth floors of a 1970’s cast in place concrete building; however the design team did not modify the primary structure. The project entailed significant work to the laboratory layout, circulation, interior finishes, millwork, lighting, as well as custom designed seating and reception desk. Materials include black polished concrete, white venetian plaster, clear powder coated steel, rubber flooring, low iron glass and reclaimed Douglas Fir.

Jury Comments: The jury appreciated the selection of materials and disciplined approach to understanding the functional aspects of the laboratory and amplifying the importance of collaboration by providing quality corridors that will engage the users. The space is restrained in use of materials and colors but with exquisitely detailed components that create spatial drama through simple, bold expanses of glass. The organization of the furnishings and lighting in the labs is very successful.
