A suburban downtown is anchored by a modern plaza with lots to say about its context. A small building provides not only restrooms for visitors, but an icon for the city along a busy corridor. The monarch butterfly, a popular motif in the city, is inspiration for many of the textures on the building. Weathering steel panels are affixed to a steel substructure which shields a stairway to the rooftop deck. A unique pattern in the masonry further intensifies the texture of the facility as a canopy arches over the building and gestures towards the plaza. The concrete stain of the plaza exhibits the braided nature of an adjacent creek. A waterfall and interactive play feature brings excitement while supplying a calming aural mask to city noise.

Jury Comments: The canopy in a park becomes a beacon. A humble public need become a public space that integrates with and improves the park it serves. It has civic aspirations that feels more like a grand pavilion despite its size. We hope the roof terrace is a public space to further augment the community benefit.
