MERIT

UNBUILT

Entry Name: River Probes: UNO Aquatic Toxicology Field Laboratory
Firm: Randy Brown Architects
Owner: University of Nebraska Omaha Department of Biology

The challenge was to construct a field laboratory building (aka River Probe) within the banks of the Elkhorn River. The River Probe will provide space for working, holding tanks to hold fish and other aquatic animals for experimentation. Water from the river will be continuously pumped through the holding tanks so the animals are exposed to river water in real time. The River Probe will also function as a data acquisition station, allowing for streaming of data and video of experiments to the organization’s website. River Probes are planned for Nebraska’s seven major rivers. The designed looked to the context, the reed grasses on the river banks, bridge piers and river boat technology to provide inspiration for the structure. All materials are recycled or renewable creating a sustainable building.

Jury Comments: The project inspired the jury with its academic rigor and passionate exploration of a meaningful purpose, all in a mysterious and engaging presentation.
