Located on the top floor of an urban warehouse in Omaha, this “white box” apartment space was chosen for its natural daylight, expansive walls, and high ceiling. Its vertical space, large windows, and remote location all served to create a successful environment suited to the artist’s expressed inspirational needs: quiet, flexibility, and natural daylight. An open sleeping loft was created by inserting a warm and richly detailed object possessing a human scale, treating it as a piece of inhabitable furniture clad in a humble tulip poplar wood. This introduction brought opportunity in creating efficient living space while maintaining access throughout the apartment to the valuable natural lighting and visual openness of the original space. The form creates an intimate pocket deep inside the “white box” suited for the artist’s meditation and seclusion.

Jury Comments: In a masterfully simple move, a small wood enclosure placed carefully in the larger volume creates space inside itself as well as zoning the space above, left, right, front, and back – less is indeed more.
