AIA Nebraska receives $15,000 grant from AIA National
Member Service Alignment Pilot Program

In conjunction with AIA Repositioning efforts, the AIA is positioning for robust future growth and relevance through stronger alignment, collaboration and partnerships among components; elimination of redundancy, and streamlined effective governance. To improve member service delivery, AIA is seeking best practices from chapters that address the critical issues raised in repositioning feedback, specifically: component autonomy versus unity, component structure, tier coordination, leadership tenure and agendas and board size and composition.

The AIA National Board approved the following recommendations to support repositioning our member services:

  • Ensure that all AIA members receive a baseline of service by enabling state-wide collaboration and cooperation.
  • Verify component performance through a regular review of component performance.

To achieve this end, the Board agreed to maintain AIA’s current three-tiered organizational structure, but clarifying and optimizing it in these ways:

  • “Core Member Services”: New standards of excellence and accountability for all AIA components have been developed and aligned with our strategic goals (elevate public awareness, advocate for the profession, and create and expand the sharing of knowledge and expertise to help ensure a prosperous future for our members). These core services will form the baseline that all members can expect, regardless of geographical location. To implement these services successfully, components should seek opportunities to work in unity rather than in total autonomy. A 3 year accreditation will be require
  • Align Components within a State: Add member value by eliminating redundancy and inefficiency in the three-tiered structure. Each state and the international region will receive a revenue share amount reflecting its percentage of assigned membership as of December 31 each year. This will help ensure the delivery of core member services within each organization’s “footprint.”

The Nebraska Way - AIA Nebraska and its local components, want to ensure we are offering the highest level of membership services to our members in the most efficient, effective way possible. Our goal is to discover the best options for offering membership services as we develop our Statewide Member Service Agreement due February 1.  Conversations have started, and all of the components' leadership is generally aware of the accreditation and core member service requirements. Funding from the AIA Member Service Alignment Pilot Program will enable the chapters to hire a facilitator and conduct a daylong strategic planning to be held on October 22 at the AIA Nebraska office. This daylong strategizing will allow each components' representatives to fully examine and evaluate any potential restructuring or consolidations to ensure we are collaborating as a whole in providing our membership core services effectively and efficiently. Any proposed changes to the bylaws must be approved by the membership of each chapter. In the meantime please contact your local chapter or AIA NE if you have any questions. AIA Nebraska will keep you updated as any new developments occur.

Robert C. Ripley, FAIA
2015 Harry F. Cunningham Gold Medal Recipient
Architectural Excellence in the State of Nebraska

Robert C. Ripley, FAIA, Nebraska Capitol Administrator, Office of the Capitol Commission, is the recipient of the 2015 Harry F. Cunningham Gold Medal for Architectural Excellence in the State of Nebraska.  The Gold Medal is the highest honor the Nebraska Chapter of The American Institute of Architects (AIA) can bestow and is awarded in recognition of the most distinguished achievement in architecture or service to the profession of architecture in the State of Nebraska.
Nominators Dan Worth, AIA, BVH Architects and Fred Zarate, AIA, State of Nebraska said, “Nebraskans of all ages have been positively affected by Robert C. Ripley’s passion for public service, architecture and particularly by his passion for the conservation and preservation of the Nebraska State Capitol. Bob has been the caretaker, the steward, and the guardian of Nebraska’s history as depicted and beautifully contained within the walls and grounds of Bertram Goodhue’s monumental Capitol.”

For more than 32 years, Ripley’s core job has been to restore and preserve the Nebraska State Capitol, a National Historic Landmark, including the creation of a legacy Capitol Master Plan that will guide conservation of this national treasure for hundreds of years to come.

Click here to view Robert Ripley’s submission.

The Gold Medal commemorates the achievements of Harry Francis Cunningham who came to Nebraska as lead architect for Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue's office during completion of the tower phase of construction for the State Capitol following Goodhue's death in 1924. It was Goodhue's revolutionary building design which won the nationwide competition in 1920 for the creation of the state house in Lincoln. Cunningham subsequently established the first school of architecture at the University of Nebraska- Lincoln.
