Note from AIA NE Lobbyist Mary Campbell

The Legislature convened on January 9. The Interior Design Coalition of Nebraska has introduced LB748 an interior designers certification act, AIA Nebraska is in the process of analyzing bill. All indicators are that this short session could be one “for the books.” Speaker Mike Flood is approaching this session with a new game plan. Breaking with tradition, he will begin full-day debates on the second day and will also begin accepting priority bill designations on that date. This will jump-start the session during a period which has generally just involved bill introductions and some half-day debate on carry-over measures. In addition, the school-aid formula is coming in well above the projected funding level. As a consequence, it will be a challenge to meet several other high-priority funding needs, such as road construction, corrections, updating NU’s computer system, etc., etc. Another session variable is the fact that this will be the last session for 15 members because of term limits. 2008 is also an election year, with 16 seats up in the Legislature, so there will be a lot of positioning and fund raisers. And, this will all take place in 60 days!

I encourage you to participate in this year's AIA NE legislative forum, January 29, 11 am - 1:00 pm at the State Capitol. This is an excellent opportunity to learn of potential legislation impacting your profession and greet the State Senators. I look forward to seeing you then.

Randy Brown Architects Receives 2008 AIA Honor Awards for Interior Architecture

Project: Laboratory
Location: Douglas County, Neb.
Architect: Randy Brown Architects
Client: Randy and Kim Brown
Though its forms are sleek and modern, the Laboratory house, by Randy Brown, FAIA, takes its cultural context from the rural Midwest, drawing its inspiration from aluminum silos and sagging red barns. Like the area’s mythic way of life, the house lives close to the land, exploring how the manmade and the natural can overlap while investing green building strategies like rainwater irrigation collectors, green roofs, and renewable materials. The house is meant to be a constantly evolving entity and a “laboratory for architectural experiments.” An example: Brown challenged students helping him build the house to design and build a toilet screen from scrap lumber in three days. “The subject of this experiment is highly relevant for our times,” the jury said. “It shows the linkage of the agricultural past and a sustainable future in a particular place.” Photo © Farshid Assassi.

50 to 50

AIA introduces 50 to 50, a how-to resource intended to assist architects and the construction industry in moving toward the AIA’s public goal of a minimum 50 percent reduction of fossil fuel consumption in buildings by 2010 and carbon neutrality by 2030. The AIA recognizes that buildings are responsible for approximately 48 percent of energy consumption in the United States. Ongoing operation and maintenance of buildings account for approximately 76 percent of U.S. electrical use. With these facts alone, it isn't hard to establish buildings as one of the primary sources of the greenhouse gases contributing to global warming and climate change. This realization has established carbon reduction as the top priority of the Institute’s SustAIAnability2030 initiative.

The 50 strategies have been selected to provide readily available and effective tools and techniques that will have an effective and immediate impact on architects’ ability to achieve significant carbon reduction. The strategies span a spectrum from broad-based site and planning objectives to specific, building-based concepts. Each strategy includes an overview of the subject, typical applications, emerging trends, links to information sources, and important relationships to other carbon reduction strategies.

Boston Society of Architects Offering Convention Scholarships to Young Architects

The AIA Convention is particularly enriched when young professionals participate. But all too often it’s only the principals who can afford to attend. Many people just starting their careers find the cost of travel, registration, accommodations, and time away from work prohibitive.

A new scholarship program conceived by the Boston Society of Architects supports young professionals who otherwise would not be able to attend. Travel scholarships of up to $500 may be awarded to 100 or more individuals residing anywhere, and individuals who receive travel scholarships also enjoy free convention registration.

Firms, schools, AIA chapters, and others can support the participation of students and young professionals through direct travel assistance or by supporting the AIA Convention Young Professionals Scholarship Fund.

Special thanks to our sponsors of this new initiative: John Moriarty & Associates, Cubellis Associates, MassHousing and Thornton Tomasetti.

For complete details

To apply, complete and return the application form (PDF) by February 22, 2008. To sponsor the traveling scholarship, complete and return the sponsorship form (PDF).
