This competition-winning addition to a public park reconceives urban signage as a place in itself. The sign is an active entry portal to Cochran Park and a meeting place for the neighborhood. The sign is large enough and broken into separate sections to become a spatial feature – visitors can inhabit its diffuse interior and inhabit the text. In addition to identifying Cochran Park with its super-graphic, the bench\sign is a social condenser, an area for small gatherings and spontaneous interaction.
Jury Notes: This is a clever reinterpretation of typical park benches. Its depth and scale make it compelling for both users and passers-by. Unlike a typical bus stop, this design adds both depth and visual interest to what is normally a fairly humble, utilitarian piece of urban furniture.
