The Pinnacle Bank Arena Garage exists in a new development immediately adjacent to Lincoln’s Historic Haymarket District. The long-standing buildings in the historic area feature layers of painted signage on their brick façades, remnants of historic industry and businesses. This phenomenon served as inspiration for the detailing of a sunshade on the new parking garage’s stair tower. In an effort to memorialize the historic context in a contemporary way, a series of historic signage images were reinterpreted into a cohesive graphic which was realized through a perforation pattern on the sunshade’s aluminum panels. The graphic captures the unique condition of paint on masonry walls by setting text within a delicate brick pattern framework.
