The master plan developed from addressing the diverse needs of the groups of people or “communities” that experience Parkland Hospital daily. The team focused on the family/public community, the physician/staff community, and the patient community. Because the design has been distinctly about the medical center’s relevance and importance as a civic anchor, and its connection to the city’s urban fabric, the planning process created “connections” to the surrounding urban context, to the community served by Parkland, to a new light rail transit system, to neighboring institutions, and especially to patients/families.
Jury Comments: Very well done project considering the complexity of the project and the scale of the program. Wonderful how a massive building like this can operate at multiple scales – from the scale of the city to the scale of the detail. Successful in achieving community connectivity and technological advancement.
