Entry Name: Goodwill Headquarters – Benson Park
Firm: RDG Planning and Design
Owner: Goodwill
Photographer: Tom Kessler, Omaha, NE

Goodwill connects its mission, public efforts, and internal workings in order to be a success. Strength comes from donors who contribute funds that act as building blocks, as well as from honorees that give time and become pillars of the community. These building blocks and pillars formulate a space that celebrates and fully encompasses Goodwill’s mission to change lives and strengthen communities.

This rehabilitation of a recently abandoned big-box retail store further upheld Goodwill’s efforts. New vestibules signified entry and maintained an established identity. Metal scrim and corrugated metal panels provide additional accent to the building’s exterior. Carefully chosen unique interior materials show restraint while still providing brightness. Environmental graphics tell the story of hope by signifying the collection of individuals working together for the greater good.

The unique programs within the facility produces an impact that transcends the limits of the building’s structure: a retail store promotes reuse of goods for purchase; a skills development and training center enables young adults to achieve their GED and learn vocational skills in order to get higher-paying jobs; offices and meeting spaces allow the operation and growth of this company’s mission.

Jury Comments: Giving new life to something which seems to be obsolete is a good metaphor for what Goodwill does for its clients and establishes precedence for what will continue to be a reoccurring issue… how do you readapt/reuse of the big box? This project was done with simplicity, clarity and a high level of sophistication.
