After 35 years as the home of the University of Nebraska football offices and locker rooms, an ordinary three-story concrete building hidden in the shadows of Memorial Stadium was transformed into the new home of the Schorr Center for Computer Science and Engineering. The Schorr Center is critical to the University’s innovative research in software engineering, informatics, and systems. The most powerful computer cluster in the state – known as “PrairieFire” – is housed in the 18,434 s.f. center and is used by students, research faculty and software engineers to study nanoscale chemistry, subatomic physics, meteorology, genomics, and artificial intelligence.

Jury Comments: Not only a vast improvement over the previous condition, this project creates a place that attracts people and does so through a sophisticated material palette and layering strategy.
