Ferrous Park: Constructing Urbanism / Ferrous Park International Housing Competition

Firms: el dorado inc, Marlon Blackwell Architect, Min-Day and FACE Design
Owner: STRETCH

The project is a response to the Ferrous Park International Housing Competition in the Crossroads Arts District of Kansas City, Missouri.  The competition was organized by the owner of the project site, a successful local artist and developer.  The basic program called for a seven-unit condominium structure and improvements to an existing sculpture garden.

The proposal is rooted in an overarching goal to create a cohesive addition to Kansas City’s urban environment that at the same time embraces the dynamic and improvisational character of the Crossroads Arts District.   The program called for the designs to embrace affordability and sustainability.  In addition, much attention was to be paid to the sculpture park itself.  Indeed, the solution our team developed is as much about built form (buildings, gates, sculptures) as it is about urban space (alleyways, streets, park space).  The interwoven and interdependent nature of these realms is critical to the success of Ferrous Park.
